Playing with colour

I have been in the studio printing with my new gelatin plate. I am using leaves from the garden to make shapes and CMYK acrylic colours on recycled cotton sheets. I was spurred on to make squares for little Alice who was born last month and I couldn’t stop printing. These leaf prints range from shades of orange, green, pink to blue and yellow. I love the effect of the colours as they blend with the shapes and it is a joy to see the combinations as they reveal themselves.

I’ve been inspired to play with colours thanks to the weekly newsletter from Jason Logan. Jason is the author of Make Ink – A Forager’s Guide to Natural Ink making and the founder of the Toronto Ink Company in Toronto.

It’s refreshing to see his take on everyday things. He is completely focused on and absorbed in colour and the newsletter includes samples of colours he extracts from things he finds as he goes about his day.

Jason writes brilliantly about colour, noticing tiny details of the light on the tips of trees or the shades of brown and grey in shadows. Mostly what he is looking for are substances such as berries or coffee grinds he can use to make amazing colours – to crush, boil or saturate to make ‘ink’. Jason’s range of sources is breathtaking and there are so many subtleties. The words he uses to describe these found colours are inventive and innovative.

You can buy the book as well as readymade inks from Jason’s website https://www.jasonslogan.com/

You can subscribe to the newsletter there too.

Thanks Jason. I’m loving playing with colour again. It’s a joy and a delight.
