Tonglen Boat

I made this little ‘Tonglen Boat’  for an exhibition of artists’ books titled COMPASSION which opens today at the Old Ambulance Station Galleries in Nambour, Queensland. Curators Ardleigh Cleveland and Ken Munsie invited a number of book artists to submit six books each on this theme. And what diverse and creative responses they have had!

Tonglen is a Buddhist practice that has interested me for some time. The text here (and in the little books nestled inside the boat) is quoted from the writing of American born Buddhist nun, teacher and author, Pema Chodrin.

Pema says: “Compassion is not a relationship between the healer and the wounded. It’s a relationship between equals. Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity.”

The boat is made of handmade plant papers and bamboo. The text about tonglen is printed on recycled and handmade papers and folded in the single sheet books within the boat. Overall dimensions are 24cm x 16.5cm x 4cm.

You can find out more about and see images from the COMPASSION Exhibition here:
