Overwintering exhibitions

The Overwintering Project is a brilliant art initiative run by Melbourne based artist Kate Gorringe Smith. It seeks to raise awareness for our migratory shorebirds and their habitat by inviting artists, in particular printmakers, to help make them visible. Kate does this by inspiring other artists to contribute work to the many exhibitions she is initiating around Australia and by raising funds for the cause through the sale of work.

And what a great success it is!
The Overwintering Project: Mapping Sanctuary was launched in 2017 and since then it has been able to raise the sum of $10,000 as a donation to the Australian Wader Study Group, a special interest group of BirdLife Australia.

You may remember some godwit books I posted in 2018. My godwit print (above) is a part of the travelling collection of prints inspired so far by Kate’s project. You can see dozens of them at exhibitions around Australia and also at this link:

Anyone can join the Overwintering Project. For more information visit the website at

So far Kate has facilitated Overwintering exhibitions in Queensland, Tasmania, NSW and Victoria. The main ‘core’ exhibition of prints will travel to galleries around Australia including Coffs Harbour, Darwin and Burnie with local exhibitions taking place all over Australia through the coming year.
