we love your books

Here is a detail from my Pianola Roll Fan Book which is included in the current dot dash on-line exhibition. The exhibition is curated by book artist Melanie Bush  and Dr Emma Powell, Senior Lecturer in Graphics/Illustration De Montfort University, Leicester, UK.

You can see the whole exhibition at

As well as teaching bookmaking and making their own experimental bookworks, Melanie and Emma collaboratively curate a yearly international and experimental artists’ book exhibition. These non-profit exhibitions are open to all.

‘We are specifically interested in experimental content and/or structure,’ they say on their website.

My contribution to dot dash is this fan book made from recycled pianola rolls which were given to me by my friend Dinah. They fitted the theme of dot dash and I liked the idea that they were being recycled.

The perforated dots and dashes on these vintage paper pianola rolls hold data that created rollicking piano music sans pianist – in this case some rags by Fats Waller. I have  reinforced the paper, decorated it with handmade stamps and folded it to create a fan book.

The text shows original lyrics.

Media used: Paper from vintage pianola rolls, handmade stamps, rag backing papers, hemp thread, leather, recycled postal tube.

I love these! Pianola rolls have a beautiful texture and patina, what a lovely idea and creative response to these materials. I think Fats would approve, he had lots of fans.
