Re-use, re-cycle, re-purpose

Skylla entrance

Julia Collinson, a talented artist and gallery curator, recently opened Skylla (pronounced Cilla) in the small town of Milton on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia.

With her daughters Bronte and Lily, Julia set up the shop with the clear mission to reduce mass-produced clothing by up-cycling clothes using traditional dyeing techniques. or on instagram at skyllas_closet

Skylla close upRe-use, re-cycle, re-purpose is the strong ethic behind this business which invests new life into garments with history and strength and recolours them using dyeing techniques such as shibori, twist dyeing or bleach resist.

The results are a mix of breath-taking, brilliant, stylish and original garments for men and women. as well as home wares (including a selection of lovingly assembled boro cushions and throws).

Julia Collinson is a masterful artist and dyer with a fine arts degree from the University of Tasmania and many years of professional experience with the master craftsman and textile artist, Jack Brilliant of Brilliant Silks.

An award winning artist, she has exhibited her work around Australia. Her highly original and striking paintings and collage are also for sale in the store.

So why am I telling you all this?

altered books skyllaBecause some of my altered books (using discarded and/or damaged books) are now on display for sale at Skylla in Milton.
