creating beautiful journals and books

Every word has music and meaning

‘Against the ruin of the world, the creative act is the only defense.’ Kenneth Rexroth.

I spent last weekend at a Poetry Master Class at Broughton Vale near Berry on the NSW south coast. It was run by my old friend Deb Westbury and organised by The Kitchen Table Poets, a dedicated group of Shoalhaven writers who meet regularly to read and discuss their latest works around their kitchen tables.

It was a nourishing and inspiring experience to be with a group of accomplished women poets writing, laughing a lot and sharing our stories. Encouraged by Deb’s thoughtful guidance, we wrote and read and wrote and read, harvesting a wealth of material for use in future poems.

Deb is a talented and vibrant writer, teacher and book artist who is based in the Blue Mountains of NSW. She has been involved with Varuna, The National Writers’ House since its inception in 1991 – as a facilitator of its community workshops, as a writing consultant, mentor and co-ordinator of various master classes.

Many of Deb’s finest and most memorable poems have been composed during her time at Varuna as teacher and visitor. She is presently working on her next collection of poetry and conducting a monthly writing group at Varuna. On request, Deb also incorporates handmade books into her writing workshops.

Since Mouth to Mouth,  her first collection of poetry was published in 1990, Deb has written

Our Houses are Full of Smoke (Angus and Robertson, 1994),

Surface Tension (Five Islands Press, 1998)

Flying Blind (Brandl & Schlesinger, 2002)

The View From Here. (Brandl & Schlesinger, 2008).
