creating beautiful journals and books

Hope Fan

I made this Hope Fan (which is actually not a book although I do make fan books) for the BOAT exhibition at Squid Studio in Nowra. Lots of people were curious about this piece and asked me about it.

Hope Fan – marama warren

The exhibition theme of boats brought me to thoughts of navigation. I’ve always loved the star charts of the ancient Polynesians and their beautiful ancient sailing canoes. I thought about the role that hope plays when searching for or travelling to new land, managing rough seas or navigating new ways of living. Hope provides buoyancy at times of risk and change.

The fan structure gave me the freedom to show movement. The canoes appear to be sailing across the fan as if the paper folds are waves. The text, which is from a longer poem of mine, reads:

…swaying, creaking, swelling, seeking –

seeking new land where lost lands of legend lie submerged.

The grandmothers are singing songs of travelling to the unknown.

The grandmothers are singing songs of epic journeys to new worlds.

Now the Hope Fan has found a new home. Thanks to Lea Hawkins for this mysterious photographic record.

Another beautiful work of art :)

“Hope provides buoyancy at times of risk and change.” I like that and will hold onto the thought.

    Hope all is going well.
