collaborative altered book

Lily's board book

I made this collaborative board book with my friend Lily. She altered a children’s board book to create a canvas or background using gesso, paints, papers and fabrics. She gave it to me and I added words and images and gave it back to her.
Lily is wonderfully creative and original. I have known her for around 30 years. We share our interests in music, gardening and art. At their forest property on the Clyde River in NSW, Lily and her partner, Norm have nurtured their wild and wonderful flower and abundant vegetable gardens through drought, fire, and flood.
Lily cares for her 94 year old mother and her two teenagers; she knits quirky jumpers; tea cosies; hats and anything that takes her fancy. She also makes unusual and original fabric quilts and skirts out of retro tablecloths. And she still has time for her friends.

Our altered board book

I have made collaborative books with other friends as well, including two with poet Dorothy Swoope, who also lives in the eucalyptus forest to the west. Touch of a Word and High Summer USA are hand bound, limited editions of Dorothy’s painterly and eloquent poems.
More soon about  hand bound, collaborative books I’ve made with other local artist friends and the fun we had making them.

Wonderful. How I loved to see this work, and wish I was still a part of it all. Nothing like it down here, alas.
    Best wishes and love,
