Poetry in the Shoalhaven

Last Saturday I went with my friend, poet and memoir writer Dorothy Swoope, to a poetry workshop at the Shoalhaven Arts Centre in Nowra south of Sydney. The session was part Shoalhaven Stories, an ongoing project developed by Australian artist Anna Glynn based on local stories, events and myths from the region where she lives on the east coast of Australia.

The inspiring workshop was run by two much loved local poets, Chere Le Page and Colleen Duncan (both members of the Kitchen Table Poets). Anna Glynn also participated in and recorded the session on video for a special web page, soon to be launched through Shoalhaven Council. The poems and stories we wrote on Saturday will also be published in a chap book sometime in the near future. Unfortunately I missed seeing Anna Glynn’s exhibition in the art gallery but you can see her work online at

Thirteen people of all ages from around the Shoalhaven area gathered for the workshop, including veteran poet Irene Wilkie (also a member of the Kitchen Table Poets) whose latest manuscript of poems has just been accepted by Ginninderra Press. Congratulations Irene.  I look forward to reading more of your poetry when you finish your memoir about your happy childhood growing up in a Greek family in inner Sydney during the depression.
On 22nd September the Bundanon Trust will host River Readings with Les Murray, presented by South Coast Writers’ Centre, Kitchen Table Poets and FAW (Shoalhaven) as part of their River Readings Shoalhaven series.

Les is the most prolific and read poet of his generation and an Australian ‘Living Treasure’. The program will also include readings by guest poet Chris Mansell (poet, teacher and publisher extraordinaire), the Kitchen Table Poets and an Open Mic session.

Prize winners of the Shoalhaven Literary Award: Poetry 2012, the prestigious poetry prize run by Shoalhaven Branch, Fellowship of Australian Writers will be announced.
