Altered book of ancient greek myths

Altered book of greek myths - marama warren

The altered book (from 1911 original) I made for my friend Michelle when she travelled to her Greek island of Kythera recently.

I made this book for my friend Michelle to take on holiday with her to her family’s island of origin in Greece.
She made a pilgrimage to Kythera and has just returned with wonderful stories of her adventures there.
The original book, published in 1911, came from my great aunt Ida’s collection and is one I have loved for many years. The binding was beyond repair but the stories and the printed letterpress pages are so beautiful, I recycled the them and made a book for Michelle.

I also made another altered book from the original using myths about birds for my friend Charlotte. She spent two weeks on Scopelos and created some stunning etchings of birds on that island.

In the meantime, I am still at home, happily dyeing paper and playing with word trees.
