Book Project Complete

Young Mums' handmade books

Since last September, writers and artists in the local area aged between six and 30 years of age have been creating their own hand made books in a series of creative writing and book arts workshops under the banner of the Ulladulla Book Project.

Ulladulla Book Project

I was involved as as a mentor to local high school student, Lauren Hemsworth. Together we ran workshops for primary and secondary school students (and some young mothers) who produced these original and entertaining books and lent them to the project for display.

Earlier this year term, some of the creators of these books (and others) gathered at the Dunn Lewis Centre in Ulladulla to celebrate the project and give readings from their work.

This project was funded as part of the Write in Your Face program, devolved to Express Media by the Literature Board of the Australia Council of the Arts. Thanks to the Dunn & Lewis Youth Development Foundation for their great support.

This looks brilliant Marama! Can you tell me when you are running adult versions?

Bookmaking is the best way to inspire children. Of course children love reading. They just need to be inspired by people like you. Keep it up!

Just reread this, Marama, and was startled to see the name of Lauren Hemsworth. She was awarded the CWA prize for citizenship at SAS’s last Yr 12 prizegiving a year ago now, and that was only one of many awards she won. You’ve obviously had a good influence – AGAIN! X S
