Solstice – Matariki

In the southern hemisphere, we have now passed the winter solstice and the days are getting longer. In New Zealand, they are celebrating Matariki, the Pacific new year and the awakening of the light and of creativity. Here is a cluster of seven books (after the seven stars in the Pleiades) that I made to celebrate Matariki a few years ago. The text in the books is from the following poem which was published in the anthology Writing The Pacific in 2008.

Marama Warren - Matariki - seven sisters

My books to celebrate Matariki, the Pacific New Year.

Matariki
seven haikus

We are spiralling into the dark,
Matariki turns us to light.

Death and rebirth —
we celebrate the turn of a cycle and give thanks.

Gather around at hikumutu.
we have songs and stories to share.

Seven stars at dawn promise new light to the earth,
show us life goes on.

Look to the sky in the east and see
the beginning of a new year.
The turn of the season, rebirth of the sun
Pipiri is coming.

This is the time to plant seed for the year ahead.
the sun is reborn.
